Open fermented, matured in used French hogsheads. The vineyard was planted with cuttings from 100+yo vines known as the Maywald Selection, the decision to use old oak to highlight the vibrantly fragrant black fruits has resulted in a totally delicious spring fresh wine.

Sloshes in the palate with its slippery, plush, seductive, lighter than expected black and red berry fruit spectrum flavours. Aromas are sweet fruited, dusted with clove and cinnamon spice, shows whiffs of dusty oak. It ticks many boxes for flavoursome red wine done well.

The sweet black cherry fruits are woven into geranium, green olive, smoked meats aromas. In the mouth, an intense firm palate with a thread of refined tannins. Medium full bodied, red cherry into blacker flavours and intense tannins creating a saliva inducing savoury tannin finish. More restrained than the Block 3, Block 8 is the serious older sibling and Block 3 the cheerful younger brother.

The deep garnet-purple 2014 Block 8 Maywald Selection Shiraz Barossa Valley opens to a very expressive blackberry and crushed plum notes, with pencil lead tar and dusty earth. It is medium-full in body, fresh and has chewy tannins supporting a good fruit core through the long, peppery finish.
