The 2005 RESERVA is a blend of Touriga Nacional (70%), Tinta Roriz (20%) and the rest Touriga Franca. It is tighter and less open the 2004 Reserva at the moment, and it is not quite as overtly flavorful, perhaps, at least not at first. It is a very well constructed wine, however, with assertive tannins providing grip and intensity on the finish, and flavorful fruit poking through with some air. As with most 2004 and 2005 comparisons, this occasionally scores some points with its charm and elegance, but, less commonly, it also seems more intense and almost as deep (granting that it is a year younger). Although I had a slight preference for this 2005 Reserva, the ’04 is drinking much better at the moment. Unlike its lesser sibling, the Colheita 2005, the ’05 Reserva has a chance to develop some complexity in the cellar, and it should hold well. This is a very nice value. There were 1,250 cases produced. Drink 2009-2018. Quinta do Portal is a winery that seems poised for a breakthrough. From what I have tasted, the wines have been consistently improving. The current lineup provides some very nice values.Importer: M Imports, LLC, Coppell, TX; tel: (214) 505-0616.
