The 2012 Clementia Blanc is a lovely blend of 45% Viognier, 45% Roussanne and 10% Clairette from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards cropped at a modest 36 hectoliters per hectare. It exhibits lots of chalky minerality as well as hints of rosewater, orange marmalade, mango and pineapple. Medium-bodied with good structure, delicious fruit and surprising complexity, it should be consumed over the next several years.
Along with Peter Weygandt, I coincidentally discovered this fine estate with the release of their 1999s. Proprietor Daniel Boulle has done brilliant work over the last decade plus, and now works with the talented Philippe Cambie as his oenologist. The wines continue to go from strength to strength, including these less expensive offerings. If you haven’t familiarized yourself with Domaine Les Aphillanthes, it’s time to do so.
