The 2013 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru la Garenne, which sees one-third new oak, disguises that wood component deftly on the nose allowing the fresh green apple, grapefruit and limestone scents to be expressed. The palate is medium-bodied with good weight in the mouth. At the moment, it is just missing the nervousness that I seek in a premier cru Garenne, which seems to have been exchanged for a sense of fatness. Still, it is well balanced and long in the mouth - it just needs more breeding.
