The 2012 Ciliegiolo reveals a hearty and rustic personality that will appeal to those looking to explore new taste frontiers. This pure expression of the Ciliegiolo grape shows dark fruit tones with lingering spice and some herbal tendencies on the finish such as chopped rosemary or oregano. That dark fruit element is the protagonist despite those green background notes. The finish shows some bitterness with snappy acidity to close.

The 2011 Ciliegiolo Maremma Toscana impresses for its energy, vivacity and focus. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint and spices are all layered together beautifully in this vibrant red. The 2011 has maintained great freshness and energy for the year. This is a terrific showing. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2015. Sassotondo is another of the Tuscan properties that routinely turns out fabulous wines but seems to get little recognition.
