The 2009 Q Tempranillo (100%) spent one year in new French and American oak and one year in bottle prior to release. Sourced from 40-year-old vines, it exhibits an alluring bouquet of balsam wood, mineral, spice box, violets, and blackberry. This sets the stage for a savory, ripe, incipiently complex wine with excellent volume and length. It has the stuffing to evolve for 1-2 years and will be at its best from 2013 to 2019. Deep ruby red, Asian spices, incense, mineral, earth notes, blackberry, layered, good depth.

After not having seen this Tempranillo in several years, I’m reminded of why the variety is shaky at best in Argentina. This bottling, with its weight and obvious oak, is slightly raisiny on the nose and then big, cheesy and earthy on the palate. The 2006 Tempranillo Q was sourced from an estate vineyard planted in 1974. Purple-colored, it displays an enticing bouquet of mineral, blackberry, pepper, and espresso. Medium- to full-bodied, on the palate it is dense, nicely endowed with spicy, savory fruit, and impeccably balanced. It will evolve for 2-3 years and will offer prime drinking from 2011 to 2018.
