From a parcel on a steep slope in the Neu Bamberg district that is characterized by reddish clay slate and sandstone strongly colored by iron oxide, the 2022 Neu Bamberg Riesling Rotliegend opens with a very intense but also still somewhat untamed bouquet on the pure, nevertheless refined and typical mineral nose that reveals stony notes as well as diverse citrus fruits and mango aromas (the latter in a discreet expression, though). Entirely vinified in stainless steel, the wine is round, lush and also savory in its mineral character. This is a linear dry Riesling with enormous tension and persistent salinity. This is not built on flesh and texture but entirely on terroir. It's a challenging wine for many consumers, but it's delightful for Riesling nerds who don't want to spend a fortune. There's very good length and remarkable complexity for a Riesling at this price point. Gorgeous. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in January 2024.

The 2021 Neu Bamberg Riesling Rotliegend opens with a fascinatingly pure and flinty as well as intense and complex bouquet of ripe and well-concentrated Riesling fruits intermingled with notes of iodine and crushed stones with quartzite. Crystalline yet also lush and round on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, elegant and crystalline Riesling with a saline and tensioned as well as intense finish. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in December 2022.

The 2020 Neu Bamberg Riesling "Rotliegend" opens beautifully pure and crystalline on the elegant, finely concentrated, always refreshing, finely flinty and aromatic nose (mirabelle, yellow plums). Round, refined and crystalline on the palate, this is a precise but sappy Riesling with a stimulatingly piquant and salty finish and fine phenolic and bitter grip. This is an excellent dry but persistently fruity, Mosel-like Riesling from a special part of Rheinhessen that already drinks very, very well. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw cap. Tasted in January 2022.

From four plots with vines averaging 30+ years of age, the 2018 Riesling Neu Bamberg Rotliegend is finer, brighter, flintier and super complex yet also super bright and elegant on the slightly smoky nose. Round and pure on the palate, this is a nervy, vital and elegant Riesling that still doesn't have the depth and complexity it will have in the near future. The three of the four plots were purchased from Weingut Fries, who farmed conventional, and Daniel didn't use the grapes for three years before he decided to integrate the fruit for his Rotliegend. Tasted at the domaine in March 2020.

From a single, warm, southwest-facing plot on red porphyry soils with 12-year-old vines, the 2017 Riesling Neu Bamberg Rotliegend is bright, clear and intense on the warm and delicately spicy and herbal nose that blends the purity of the soil with the warmth of the exposition. It's kind of like the original Würzgarten, if you like to draw comparisons. On the palate, this is a generous, lush and elegant Riesling with intense fruit and texture, fine tannin grip and lingering salinity. Very juicy on the finish. It's kind of like a red wine. Tasted at the domaine in March 2020.
