His 2005 Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Spatlese “Portz” is loaded with the heady scents of overripe pear, lily, gardenia, and banana. Ripe and almost gaudy on the palate, with a plush, creamy texture and a honeyed cast from a low level (Vollenweider reports) of botrytised berries, this finishes with a faintly bitter edge nicely folded into its plush, persistent and subtly caramelized fruit.
