Made with the popular Vermentino grape, the Tua Rita 2021 Perlato del Bosco Bianco embraces white flowers and citrus over a crisp, lean-bodied style. The 2021 vintage was also quite hot, following 2020, but these 20-year-old vines have deep roots and Vermentino tends to love sunny, coastal growing conditions. There is some brief skin contact (lasting 24 hours) and dry ice is used to maintain low temperatures and protect against oxidized flavors. Aging on the lees gives the wine a touch of softness.

A pure expression of Vermentino, the Tua Rita 2020 Perlato del Bosco Bianco shows fresh aromas of green apple, white peach, dried sage and crushed stone. Because of the heat of the growing season, fruit for this wine was harvested earlier than normal. Thanks to the age of the vines' root systems and the root stock used, the wine breezes through this more challenging growing season. Production is 22,000 bottles.

I had not tasted this wine in a couple of years, and I return to it now very pleasantly surprised. The Tua Rita 2019 Perlato del Bosco Bianco is a pure expression of Tuscany's white grape of the moment, Vermentino. In the not-too-distant pas, the Perlato del Bosco Bianco was a blend of Trebbiano, Ansonica and Vermentino, but more attention and expectations for the latter eventually transformed this into a monovarietal wine. Consulting winemaker Luca D'Attoma has shown excellent results with this grape here at Tua Rita and the other nearby estates he works with, but ultimately, the desire to focus solely on Vermentino is a something of a nostalgic sentiment that is shared on a visceral level by many producers along the Tuscan Coast. This vintage benefitted from a long and slow growing season, and the wine's aromas are particularly pronounced as a result, with those greenish kiwi fruit and honeydew melon tones that are so characteristic of this variety. There's a salty, seaside element as well that reflects limestone soils. The grapes were given plenty of time to take on this heightened level of intensity, and the mouthfeel is creamy and rich thanks to up to three months of fine lees aging and simple stainless steel winemaking. There's no sweetness there per se, but there is a lovely softness instead. The wine offers distinct richness and density, suggesting a pairing with a risotto al profumo di limone. Some 20,000 bottles were made, and this wine should hit the market in June 2020. This offers unbeatable value for summer quarantine drinking at home.

The 2016 Vermentino Perlato del Bosco offers a fascinating and promising taste of this highly anticipated vintage. The summer growing season was hot and dry, but soil temperatures remained moderately cool and the vines did not suffer as a result. This vintage offers a great sense of balance and harmony with a generous and forthcoming performance. This fresh Vermentino reveals crisp lines with citrus, honey, saffron and tropical fruit sweetness.

A blend of Ansonica and Vermentino, the 2014 Perlato del Bosco Bianco has been in production since 1992, although it is rarely seen outside of Italy. This is the wine's first review in The Wine Advocate. The blend is light and luminous and the wine would wash down nicely with fresh seafood or appetizers. The finish is fresh, zippy and crisp.
