The 2011 Rosso di Montalcino is soft, supple and expressive. Dark cherries, plums, tobacco and licorice are all woven together nicely in the glass. A sleek, racy Rosso, the 2011 is built for near-term enjoyment. Sweet, floral notes add lift on the polished, impeccable finish. Nardi’s Rosso does a great job of capturing the generosity of the year while maintaining plenty of freshness. Macerations for the Rossos lasted from 15-17 days, with the goal of gentle extractions, followed by six months in cask. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2016.
I tasted a wide range of wines during my visit at Nardi, including several experimental bottlings that attest to the estate’s continued search for excellence. Some of the Nardi Brunellos remain works in progress, but the overall direction is quite positive.
