The 2008 Cuvee Elena is a blend of 48% Grenache, 24% Mourvedre, 13% Syrah, with the balance Counoise and Cinsault aged in neutral barrels and concrete. It offers up a nose of underbrush, brier, spice box, plum, and boysenberry. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has excellent volume, intense fruit, good depth, and a lengthy, pure finish. Give it 2-3 years of additional bottle age and drink it through 2020. James and Poppie Mantone’s Syncline Wine Cellars is on the eastern edge of the beautiful Columbia Gorge, an area better known for outdoor sports (fishing, boating, wind surfing) than wine production. The winery’s new collection is once again outstanding from beginning to end.Tel. (509) 365-4361; www.synclinewine.com
