The 2010 Ribolla & Malvasia Lo Speziale Bianco is gorgeous. The fruit intensity of Ribolla seems to dominate in this blend, while the qualities of Malvasia – never a shy grape – are harder to find. Still, I am quite taken with the textured expression of fruit, expressive aromatics and exceptional overall balance. The 2009 Ribolla & Malvasia Lo Speziale Bianco is certainly beautiful from a textural standpoint, but I am not sure what the rationale is for blending these two very distinctive grapes. The aromatic and flavor profile is much closer to Friulano, while the expressive, exotic aromatics that are typical of Malvasia are nowhere to be found. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2012. The 2008 Ribolla e Malvasia Lo Speziale Bianco is the most complete of these offerings. Gorgeous, expressive aromatics lead to white peaches as the wine opens up in the glass, showing more verve and minerality than the Friulano. A long, refined finish adds the final touch.
