This offering possesses a certain rusticity revealing an unexpected Amarone-like character that gives it considerable personality. An excellent value, the 2001 School Block (a 10,000-case blend of 60% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Merlot) offers a dense ruby/purple color in addition to a big nose of ground pepper interwoven with meaty, earthy, mushroomy scents. Dense, sweet, and ripe, with loads of fruit and body as well as a soft finish, this gutsy red could pass for a wine from southern Italy. Enjoy it over the next 3-5 years.
