The barrique-aged 1996 Chardana, a blend of 90% old vine Carignan and 10% young vine Shiraz, displays a southern Rhone-like character. Peppery, with smoky, black cherry fruit, leather, and earthy overtones, excellent texture, medium body, and light to moderate tannin in the finish, it should be drunk over the next 5-6 years. The oak highlights rather than interferes with the fruit character.
