Rocking Horse Zinfandel Lamborn Vineyard

This small winery has produced a delicious, but tannic, backward, mountain-styled 1995 Zinfandel from the Lamborn Vineyard. It offers pepper, spice, minerals, earth, and this varietal's tell-tale raspberry fruit. A deep ruby/purple-colored, well-structured, powerful Zinfandel, it has yet to reveal all of its charm. Nevertheless, it takes no special ability to recognize that this wine offers impressive depth, ripeness, purity, and intensity. It is impeccably made, but do not expect a lush, forward style of Zinfandel. Drink this rustic, macho Zin over the next 8-9 years.Tel. (707) 226-5555

The 1994 Zinfandel Lamborn Vineyard displays a dark ruby/purple color, followed by plenty of black-cherry and raspberry fruit in the dense, peppery, earthy nose. Accessible, but still needing more time in the cellar, this is a full-bodied, powerful, muscular style of Zinfandel revealing evidence of spicy, American oak. It should drink well for 7-8 years. I have had mixed emotions about Rocking Horse's wines in the past, but certainly the four reviewed in this segment acquitted themselves well.Tel. (707) 226-5555

Another late-released 1990, this dark, plum-colored wine displays a spicy, vanillin-scented nose, and rustic, full-bodied flavors dominated by tough tannins. The excellent underlying extraction of fruit is accompanied by a certain astringence and firmness that suggest cellaring may be beneficial. On the other hand, the tannins may turn out to be too excessive for the wine's fruit. Time will tell. I would wait at least two years before pulling the cork on what appears to be a good wine.
