Prugnolo is the name of a mountain shrub found on the perimeter of the vineyards with bluish-purplish berries that ripen just about the same time the grapevines do. A blend of Nebbiolo from various parcels, the Rainoldi 2017 Valtellina Superiore Prugnolo is a deceptively light and streamlined wine that in fact offers good length and finish. The wine opens to a light ruby color, and the bouquet dances with wild berries, blue violets and crushed stone. This 2017 vintage, in a release of about 8,800 bottles, offers some tannic crunch or firmness that makes this a good partner to the local slow-cooked beef dish, manzo alla valtellinese. This is a terrific, well-priced bottle for a snowy night by the fireplace.

Stemmy herb and forest floor accents lead the way in this firm, fresh red, layered with silky dried raspberry and spice box notes on the palate.
