The entry-level 2014 Corral de Campanas is a young-vine Tempranillo cuvée partly aged in American oak barrels for nine months. There are dark aromas of licorice, peat, and a hint of leather and wet fur. The palate is medium to full-bodied with some violet flavors, but the fruit seems to be receding. I'd drink it sooner rather than later. 39,000 bottles produced.

There is a faint animal character in the 2013 Corral de Campanas, which shows aromas of licorice, ink and leather over the core of ripe cherries and dark plums, with enough spice to make it interesting. The palate shows more oak-related flavors and some astringency, with moderate acidity. 49,000 bottles.

The cheaper wines fared better, starting with the 2012 Corral de Campanas, which is a young-vine cuvee with aromas of ripe black cherries and licorice and a medium-bodied palate, but some harsh tannins that feel a bit disproportionate for a young wine that should be more accessible and easier to drink. The 2010 Corral de Campanas is pure Tinta de Toro from their 11 hectares of young vines between 6 and 15 years old. It is aged 50% in American oak from Mendocino for nine months with 50% new oak, the remainder in stainless steel with micro-oxygenation. It has a simple, fruit-driven bouquet of sappy blackberry, pomegranate and cranberry fruit that is missing a little delineation but demonstrates good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a chewy entry. There is plenty of ripe wild strawberry and mulberry fruit with a punchy, assertive entry that does not outstay its welcome. This is very commendable for the price. Drink now-2017.
