The 2021 Rosso di Montalcino (aged in oak botti for a quick 10 months) reveals a dark garnet color and a medium-rich appearance. The wine's color and texture are richer than one might expect of a Rosso, and the mouthfeel is softer too. But it also reveals a very accessible and easy personality with dark cherry fruit and blackberry that is intermingled with light toast and spice. Some 10,000 bottles were released.

The Poggio Nardone 2020 Rosso di Montalcino shows some of the softness and ripeness of the hot vintage with cherry confit, dried raspberry and crushed limestone. This 10,000-bottle release is velvety on the plate, yet it maintains a fresh and easy-drinking personality all the while. There are pretty Mediterranean notes of lavender and rosemary at the back.

This wine pours from the bottle with ruby intensity and bright luminosity. The Poggio Nardone 2018 Rosso di Montalcino offers ripe berry notes with cherry and blackberry up at the front. The rest of the bouquet is very simple, following a steady Sangiovese playlist of crushed flower, spice and forest floor. You get that characteristic sour cherry note on the close, to enjoy with a serving of tagliatelle and ragù. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

Poggio Nardone's 2017 Rosso di Montalcino (with 35,000 bottles produced) is a wine of extreme equilibrium and balance. Given the scorching heat and dryness of the vintage, this wine is remarkable. I highly recommend this easygoing Rosso for informal pasta or pizza dinners at home. The wine is soft and round; however, it still maintains that characteristic Sangiovese freshness and perkiness. It opens to a deeply saturated color and a lean mouthfeel with aromas of black fruit and plum. You taste that Rosso simplicity in the mouth. Some 35,000 bottles were made.

The 2016 Rosso di Montalcino surprises, thanks to its dark color and thick extraction. You don't usually get this much volume and substance from a Rosso di Montalcino, which is normally designed for quick and easy drinking. Dark cherry and blackberry preserves rise slowly to the top. Those primary fruit flavors are followed by dark spice and tobacco. This Rosso sees ten months in French barrels. The quality put forward here bodes well for the upcoming Brunellos from this classic vintage.
