The 2013 Rosso di Montalcino Sorgente is an easy-drinking red with generous aromas of dark fruit and light spice that are presented in an upfront and immediate manner. The wine offers moderate complexity and the bouquet is a little confused in places. All is forgiven, given the greater purpose and personality of this no-fuss Sangiovese-based wine that would pair nicely with pasta or steak. In the mouth, it delivers a clean approach and medium build on the finish.

The 2010 Rosso di Montalcino Sorgente is a fabulous example of the vintage. Juicy dark cherries, tobacco, mint and violets mesh together in a wine of nearly indescribable elegance. Mid-weight, gracious yet wonderfully resonant, the Rosso impresses for its exceptional balance and class. I especially like the way the 2010 finishes with such substantial energy and vibrant. The 2010 shuts down quickly in the glass, but if you can catch the magic now, you won’t be sorry. This is a great introduction to the wines of the estate. In a word – fabulous. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2022. I tasted some of the most thrilling wines of my February trip at Salicutti. Proprietor Francesco Leanza has done a marvelous job with these new releases. The wines I tasted in barrel were equally captivating. In particular, Leanza has the very best 2011 Brunello I have tasted from cask so far. Leanza crafts his Brunello from two vineyards, Piaggia and Teatro. The wines are vinified and aged separately, 2012 being an exception because of the low yields of the year. They are aged in a combination of medium and large casks, with a progression from smaller to larger that takes place over time. Leanza has a preference for French oak, which he uses for all of his casks, except the largest (40 hectoliters), which are Slavonian oak. In the past, I have at times been critical of the Salicutti wines for their small imperfections, but I did not pick up any of those notes in any of the wines I tasted. An open, pliant wine, the 2009 Rosso di Montalcino Sorgente is an excellent choice for readers who are holding some of the estate’s more age worthy bottles in the cellar. An attractive melange of floral-infused red fruits inform the lush, expressive finish. The 2009 Rosso impresses for its early accessibility and the pure pleasure it provides, although classicists will likely prefer the 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2019. The wine shows marvelous depth and a muscular personality that flows through effortlessly to the eternal finish. This beautifully nuanced, layered Rosso puts many a Brunello to shame. The 2007 Rosso di Montalcino Sorgente is a gorgeous wine laced with perfumed red fruit, flowers, spices and minerals. The wine possesses gorgeous depth, sweet, silky tannins and an exceptional sense of harmony. Subtle notes of tar, smoke and licorice are woven through to the long, sublime finish. This is without question one of the finest Rossos of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2019. Proprietor Francesco Leanza makes wine loaded with personality. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically, while winemaking is very much traditional in approach.
