The 2007 SIMBOLO is a typical Douro blend, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, fermented in tank and then aged in a combination of French and American oak for 18 months. Compared to its siblings reviewed this issue, the Simbolo has an extra layer of depth, although it remains quite elegant. It has the best structure of the group of wines reviewed from this winery in this issue and the best integration of oak and fruit, too. The tannins in fact are a bit aggressive and hard initially and this is the wine in this group that you will want to hold for a couple of years. In the progression in this winery’s lineup, this is very likely the best wine, but not by much, and the price hike is considerable to get there. Drink 2012-2021.
