The 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Cupio (with 10,000 bottles made) is a tight, bright and very fresh wine with sour fruit, dried cranberry, smoke, tar and spice. This wine is thin and compact on the palate, surely requiring more time to flesh out and soften around the edges. It shows very fine but tight tannins that impart lasting texture to the palate.

The accessible (and well-priced) Cupio is quickly developing its own brand recognition within the greater Pinino portfolio. The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Cupio opens to a pretty bouquet with licorice and aniseed that gives lift and buoyancy to wild berry and crushed flowers. The fruit from this warm and sunny vintage is presented with good intensity and harmony, ceding to elegant tannins and fresh acidity. This risotto-friendly Brunello offers tangy, balsam and herbal sensations on the finish. Exactly 10,174 bottles were released.

From the folks at Pinino, this wine offers a more accessible and food-friendly overall approach. The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Cupio offers bright fruit tones of dried raspberry and cherry, all backed by mild spice and grilled herb. The wine is subdued in terms of intensity, and the mouthfeel is rather short and compact. Some 13,866 bottles were made.

Showing a steady but slightly evolved personality, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Cupio delivers dark fruit with dried cherry and pressed currant. This wine ages in large Slavonian oak casks for 30 months, so you also get a good dose of spice and smoke at the back. The mouthfeel is delicate and fine and provides a beautifully silky texture that caresses the palate.
