The 2008 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill received the same elevage as the Vista Hills. It has a lovely, silky palate feel and very good red fruit flavors, but there is nothing below the surface. Panther Creek’s wines have been less than inspiring in recent years. I find it surprising that in a great vintage like 2008, three of the eight wines presented could not be recommended and only one barely qualified as outstanding. Not to be too harsh on Panther Creek, no one will be offended by these wines. In fact, most imbibers will enjoy them. My favorite of the portfolio is the 2007 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill. Medium ruby-colored, it exhibits an enticing nose of toast, spice box, underbrush, black cherry, and black raspberry. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has plenty of layered, savory fruit, enough tannin for balance, and lively acidity. This well-balanced effort will evolve for 1-2 years and offer a drinking window extending from 2011 to 2019.
