The 2020 Sannio Piedirosso is punchy and raw with lots of plummy dark fruit, milled peppercorn and earthy iris root. The wine is broad and rich, and although it doesn't offer huge complexity or depth, it covers the palate nicely with its sleek, mid-weight texture. Some 10,000 bottles were made.

The 2015 Sannio Piedirosso is packaged in a screwcap bottle. This is worth pointing out only because I see so few of them from this region of Southern Italy. The wine shows excellent primary aromas with an energetic and vibrant quality of fruit. Wild berry, cherry and pressed raspberry add bright contours and freshness. This medium-bodied red is not too sharp in terms of acidity, although you do notice the crispness. The wine sees strict temperature-controlled fermentations to keep those aromas intact and is refined in stainless steel. It also offers great value.

Sour cherry, cranberry, licorice and cola open the nose of Mustilli’s Piedirosso. This is an easy, fresh wine that would pair with pizza or pasta topped with loads of cheese. ——M.L.(6/1/2011)—— 86
