The Mocali 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Le Raunate (with only 2,000 bottles made) shows width, depth and plenty of texture that is ironed out nicely thanks to black cherry, plum and other purple fruits. On first nose, the wine is ample, fragrant and nicely fruity. However, it reveals a much quieter and leaner approach to the palate with an emphasis on freshness and mid-palate tannins.

The Mocali 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Delle Raunate (with only 2,000 bottles made) shows a heavy center of gravity with dark fruit, pressed blackberry, plum, soft spice and warm earthy tones. The wine shows width and depth with a plush and generous quality of fruit that is absolutely in line with the characteristics of this warm and sunny vintage. This wine ferments and ages in tonneaux. It offers lots of volume and texture with rather dry tannins.

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Delle Raunate does not have that overt ripeness that you get in the non-single-vineyard Riserva from the same vintage. The quality of fruit is thick and dark, but it falls short of feeling jammy. The personality here is big and bold, so hold your horses. Pressed plum and dried cherry mesh well with spice, tobacco and bitter chocolate. The wine is fermented in tonneaux and aged in oak for four years. Only 2,000 bottles were produced.

This is Mocali's top shelf wine. The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna delle Raunate shows a higher dose of power and overall determination compared to the annata versions of this single-vineyard Sangiovese. That extra year of aging before the wine is released as a Riserva has gone a long way to flesh out and build the momentum of this brawny Brunello. Because the bouquet is so forceful, the mouthfeel feels weightless and streamlined in comparison. That contrast makes this wine very interesting. I would suggest opening this bottle after 2018.
