A blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah, the 2006 Vin de Pays Gard Syrah/Grenache (which is marketed as the Cuvee Tradition in countries other than the USA) is aged only in tank, and is all the better for it. A dark ruby hue is accompanied by crunchy, fresh, lively, cherry and currant fruit, excellent purity, zesty acidity, and a long, heady finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years. Another reference point estate in the Costieres de Nimes, Mas des Bressades fashions fresh, lively wines meant to be consumed during their first few years of life. The spice-scented 2004 Syrah – Grenache Vin de Pays du Gard exhibits sweet dark berry flavors, an appealing satiny texture in its attack as well as mid-palate, and a structured, tannin-filled finish. This is one of my favorite value-priced producers. The 2003 Syrah/Grenache (a 50-50 blend) boasts a deep ruby color in addition to a striking perfume of melted licorice and black cherry jam. The tank-fermented and aged 2002 Grenache/Syrah (45% of the former and 55% of the latter) boasts plenty of black currant and berry fruit along with hints of licorice, pepper, and spice. It could easily pass for a light-weight Chateauneuf du Pape. The finish is slightly compressed and short (no doubt because of the trying vintage conditions), but this is a tasty southern French fruit bomb to enjoy over the next 1-2 years.
