The Lunelli family's 2012 Trentino Pinot Nero Maso Montalto represents a solid foray into the world of still wines on behalf of Italy's leading sparkling wine producer. The wine shows grace and elegance, but it does not hold back in terms of power. The fruit shows moderate concentration and the bouquet is redolent of wild berry, pressed rose petal and wet earth. In terms of Pinot Nero, this oak-aged expression is slightly more muscular and brawny compared to wines made in the neighboring Alto Adige region where Pinot Nero is commonly found. Less convincing, however, is a point of sourness that appears on the close.
