My favorite wine from Lafond is the 2002 Chardonnay Sweeney Canyon. This impressive effort boasts a terrific texture as well as big, buttery, orange, citrus, and mineral characteristics that suggest a Batard-Montrachet from Burgundy. Deep, full-bodied, and pure, with nicely integrated wood and alcohol, it should be consumed over the next 2-3 years. Tel. (800) 225-3633

The 2000 Chardonnay Sweeney Canyon Vineyard’s bouquet of citrus oils, honeysuckle, and apricot jam is followed by a medium to full-bodied, fruity, complex Chardonnay. Good acidity provides uplift and vigor to this lush 2000. Tel. (800) 225-3633

Elaborately oaked, and opens with a smooth waft of buttered toast, smoky char and vanilla. There are hints of fruit in the aroma, but it’s on the palate that the flavors really hit. Tropical fruits, mainly, with hints of white peach, and a sleek minerality that’s part acidity, part stony terrior. Complex, young and compelling. ——S.H.(10/1/2003)—— 92
