The negociant wines of La Vieille Ferme are made by Jean-Pierre Perrin, the co-proprietor of the renowned Chateau Beaucastel. They have consistently represented great values, so it is not surprising that their 1990s are extremely well-made wines. The 1990 Cotes du Rhone-Gold Label, a serious blend of 40% Grenache, 20% Mourvedre, 10% Syrah, 10% Cinsault, and the rest various other Rhone varietals, is a surprisingly big, bold, dramatically flavored, spicy, berry-scented wine, with admirable intensity, soft tannins, a heady alcohol and glycerin content, and a robust, spicy finish. I would not be surprised to see this wine evolve even more complexity and character over the next 4-5 years. By the way, should you run across any of the 1989s from La Vieille Ferme, they, too, are still drinking well and merit consideration. I should also note that none of the 1991s merit a recommendation.
