Made with the little-known Pignolo grape that is native to northeast Italy, the 2007 Colli Orientali del Friuli Pignolo shows attractively aged aromas of tilled earth, dark cola, licorice and tar. The wine presents a generous and robust bouquet that is followed by a mid-weight mouthfeel and lean textural fiber. You are made aware of the wine's 14.5% alcohol as well as a slightly sour note on the finish. However, as far as aging goes, this 12-year-old wine has held up like a champ.
