The 2008 Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit is the newest edition in a line of dessert wines that I always look forward to tasting, year after year. If you’re a fan of Picolit (a variety that produces excruciatingly low yields because of a rare genetic disorder), this is one of the best bottles available on the market today. The cool vintage adds extra focus and freshness, but this wine is already extremely well developed despite its youth. Thick layers of honey, roasted almond, candied peach, dried fig, cinnamon and Indian spice mingle together to form a bouquet of pleasing complexity. You can count the lasting mouth-feel flavors over many long minutes. This bijoux bottle will surely develop complexity with more years of aging. Drink: 2014-2025.
All these wines are imported to the United States with the exception of the Illivio white blend. No surprise, Livio Felluga has produced another knock-out collection of new vintages. The big news is the use of the recently-confirmed Rosazzo appellation on the estate’s top white wines, the Terre Alte and the Abbazia di Rosazzo.
