Fermented in steel and aged in large oak casks for three years, the 2013 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva takes a classic approach to Tuscany’s mighty Sangiovese grape. The bouquet shows tones of dried fruit, cherry, black currant and cigar box. There are no sharp edges or elements that appear out of place. The tannins are smooth and integrated. In all, the wine is a bit closed upon first examination, with slightly reduced notes of flint or asphalt, but it doesn’t take more than a minute or two to open in the glass. Some 20,000 bottles were made. Because the fruit shows an evolved quality already, I would suggest a 10-year drinking window or less.
