Jean-Michel Stephan's property 'IS in Tupin-Semons, in the south of the appella-tion. Stephan only makes red wines and, with the exception of his Vin de Pays, all of them are Cote Rotie bottlings. What they have in common is the fragrant juiciness of dark fruit, dotted with notes of graphite and licorice. His Vieilles Vignes (old vines) cuvee is an outstanding expression of the illustrious and hugely expensive Cote Rotie-pricey but well worth it when you think of what it means to be a winegrower on these precipitous slopes.
