The 2012 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Seguret Les Levants is slightly beyond the price range of this article, but I am including it as, if discounted, it could be priced at $25 or under. A blend of 55% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 13% Counoise, 7% Carignan and 5% Syrah, it comes from East-facing, old vine parcels, hence the word “l(fā)evants,” meaning they see the sunrise. It is completely fermented and aged in stainless steel and concrete. The fullest-bodied of this quartet, it exhibits deep, rich, black cherry and black currant fruit intermixed with spice box, peppery, loamy soil undertones, and hints of garrigue and licorice, and a long, heady finish. Drink it over the next 2-3 years.
Both of these Soaves come from Cantina Filippi’s highest elevation vineyards. Both are stainless steel-fermented and aged with the single vineyard Vigna della Bra planted in predominantly limestone soils and aged 20 months in stainless steel on its lees (a surprisingly long time). The Castelcerino site is composed primarily of volcanic soils. Both are 100% Garganega, the indigenous Italian white varietal associated with Soave.
