A blend of 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 8% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Carmenère, the 2017 Left Bank was bottled under screw cap. Ripe and dusty aromas float out of the glass with focus and intention. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is clean, expressive and balanced, displaying fine-grained tannins that melt over the mid-palate as flavors of savory herbs and dusty cedar sway in the mouth. It ends with a straightforward and soft umami finish. Just over 30,000 bottles were filled after the wine rested for 21 months in 30% new French oak.

The 2016 Left Bank is a blend of 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot and opens to a straightforward frame of cherry, plum and cassis. Medium-bodied, the wine is uncomplicated, with commercial appeal. 2,500 cases produced. Save this one for a pizza night.

Offering more meatiness, with notes of tobacco, earth, charcoal and dark fruits, the 2013 Left Bank (63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 8% Carmenere, and the rest Cab Franc and Petit Verdot) is medium to full-bodied, with a firm, structured feel on the palate. Aged 19 months in 80% French and 20% American oak (which shows with time in the glass), give bottles 2-3 years of cellaring and enjoy over the following decade.

A blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc, 14% Malbec, 14% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, the 2012 Left Bank is ripe, full-bodied and nicely textured, with lots of plummy dark fruits, underbrush, violets and mint. Harvested October 3-29 and aged 19 months in 48% new French and American oak, it’s another good value from this estate to drink over the coming 5-7 years.

The 2011 Left Bank represents a smoking value. Made from 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Malbec, it exhibits loads of Cabernet character with ample leaf tobacco, lead pencil, licorice and black currant aromas and flavors emerging from the glass. Medium-bodied, focused and delicious, it-s a bistro styled beauty to drink over the coming 5 to 7 years. These latest releases from Gilbert Cellars are well-made and impressive across the board. In addition, they represent solid value.
