The 2005 Brouilly Pisse Vieille is produced from a south-facing vineyard with one of the all-time great names. Legend has it that a slightly deaf, devout Catholic lady named Marionette misunderstood her priest as telling her during confession to go and piss no more (“allez, et ne pissez plus”) when he actually instructed her to sin no more (“allez, et ne pechez plus”). After a few days her pain was so intense that her husband went to see the priest who, surprised, repeated his instructions. The husband understanding what had happened, raced home yelling “Pisse vieille!” (Literally translated as “Piss, old woman.”) This wine’s soy-laced aromatics reveal black cherries and blackberries. On the palate it is medium-bodied, silky-textured, and offers considerable blackberry flavors before tightening in the finish. It will require some cellaring. Drink it between 2008 and 2012.
