As was reported in my article on the 2003s of southern Burgundy (Issue #158), Pommard produced some of the vintage’s finest efforts. In other words, Frederic Magnien knew what he was doing when he served his 2003 Pommard Grands Epenots after all his premier crus from the Cote de Nuits. This immense wine boasts a nose of black fruits and spices. Full-bodied, it is hugely concentrated, powerful, and chunky. Its flavor profile, composed of spice-laden blackberries and dark cherries, slathers the palate, lingering for more than 45 seconds. Somewhat uncivilized at present, this brawny, bulky wine will require cellaring. Projected maturity: 2010-2020. Importer: David Hinkle / Peter Vezan, North Berkeley Imports, Berkeley, CA; tel.
