The clarity of this year’s dry Pinot Blanc is in part thanks to botrytis fruit that was picked out to inform a 2005 Weissburgunder Beerenauslese. (In any given vintage, by the time the Pinot Blanc is really ripe, there are usually some botrytized bunches as well.) Aromas and flavors of orange, tangerine, and hazelnut paste abound as well as creamy richness on the palate, compatible with juicy fresh fruit and vivacity, though not nearly in the extraordinary manner demonstrated by its Riesling counterpart.
