The Fontanavecchia 2017 Aglianico del Taburno Riserva Vigna Cataratte shows dark concentration and an inky ruby appearance. There is ample power in this hot vintage that produced small berries with thick skins and less water mass. These conditions lead to the rich intensity you get here with pressed blackberry, tar, smoke and scorched earth. There is a subtle hint of sweet almond that gives a little more dimension to this 4,000-bottle release.

A release of 6,404 bottles, the 2015 Aglianico del Taburno Riserva Vigna Cataratte is barrique aged with a spicy, brambly edge that conjures rosemary essence and scorched earth. Underneath is lots of dried fruit and blackberry intensity, as well as smoke, tar and some dark volcanic notes. There's even a touch of eucalyptus or balsam to hammer home those herbal notes.

At its core, the 2010 Aglianico del Taburno Riserva Vigna Cataratte shows black fruit that is dried by oak spice, smoke, tar and scorched earth. The wine also shows some fatigue from its 18 months in French barrique. The effect is slightly evolved or oxidized with crushed stone, licorice, dried plum and prune. Ultimately, the wine is not perfectly aligned, with a 15.5% alcohol content that is too powerful. Some 6,500 bottles were made.

The 2008 Aglianico del Taburno Riserva Vigna Cataratte had me scratching my head. It feels like the oak has been used with abandon and leads to heavy aromas of Indian spice and Teriyaki smoke that cover any semblance of fruit. This Riserva is aged in French barrique for one year. The effect is overwhelming and the wine's 15.5% alcohol weight also adds to the heaviness.
