The full-bodied 2018 Cote Rotie Lieu-Dit Montmain is a powerful, broad-shouldered example of the appellation, marked by dark fruit notes and masses of ripe tannins. Plum and chocolate notes are balanced by black olives and hints of roasted beef and rich, velvety tannins on the long finish. This has come together nicely since last tasted from barrel.

The 2017 Cote Rotie Lieu-Dit Montmain relies more on elegance than power to impress. Delicate notes of crushed stone, purple raspberries and black tea swirl about on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate delivers a velvety feel and a fresh, silky finish.

Smoky campfire notes and hints of mocha lead off the 2016 Cote Rotie Lieu-Dit Montmain. A medium to full-bodied effort, it's silky and expansive on the palate, boasting lovely harmony and finesse, yet it's not lacking concentration or berry fruit. It should drink well for a decade or more.

Dense and tightly packed, the 2015 Cote Rotie Lieu-Dit Montmain will need some time to come around. Right now, it offers little more than hints of espresso and black olives, ample weight and concentration, firm tannins and a long, raspberry-tinged finish.

I love both 2014 C?te R?ties, which are undeniable successes in the vintage. From a site in the northern sector of the appellation (close to Grandes Places), the 2014 C?te R?tie Lieu Dit Montmain sports a deep ruby/purple color as well as ripe, voluptuous, serious notes of black raspberries, incense, toasted bread, lavender and spice. I love its aromatics and it’s elegant, medium-bodied and downright silky on the palate. Made from 100% Syrah and aged in 15% new French oak, drink it through 2024.
