The Feiler flagship in red, their 2006 Solitaire - comprising Blaufrankisch with Merlot and Cabernet - displays pungently smoky, spicy, lanolin, and vanillin notes of new wood, which however segue adroitly into a rich stream of ripe black and blue fruits. Hints of mint, toasted nut, and pepper add interest to an undeniably palate-staining, slightly rough finish. It will be interesting to see this get into bottle and rest for a year or so, although I have no doubts it will be capable of holding up for at least a decade. This is the Feilers’ flagship red, a blend of Blaufrankisch, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, smooth, ripe and velvety. The tannins seem soft initially because of the new French wood flavors, but to finish, they become firm, dry and tough, promising some good aging.
