The crimson-colored 2019 Grauburgunder opens with a delicate and finely structured bouquet of red fruits, milled chalk and a hint of oak. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, fresh, finessed and structured Pinot with fine tannins and a stimulating complex of salt and phenolic grip. A gorgeous, playful and refined wine of class and style. 13.5% alcohol. Tasted in November 2020.

Brassy-orange in color, the 2015 Grauburgunder Badischer Landwein has orange aromas and is clear, relatively precise, fresh and pure on the nose. This silky, vital and elegant wine reveals a pure, medium weighted, pretty mineral and well-structured body with citrus flavors in the aftertaste. The final grip is still a bit austere, but this is a real character that will age for a couple of years. The wine is sourced from a plot next to the one used for the Pinot Noir Muschelkalk, and this comes from shell limestone as well. It was fermented and aged in a 500-liter stoneware (Steinzeug) that can't be filled up to the top, so this Pinot Gris was grown in a bit of an oxidative milieu.

From 20- to 40-year-old vines on the shell limestone soils of Münchweier (Ortenau/Baden), the 2014 Grauburgunder Landwein Oberrhein has a brazen/copper color and displays promising, well concentrated fruit with floral, green tea, mineral and lime rind flavors. The palate of this light to medium-bodied 11.2% alcohol wine is characterized by a round, fruity, chalky, well balanced and quite juicy texture; it is well structured with a chalky-mineral finish. This Pinot Gris was picked one month earlier than the 2013 Burgunder Weiss & Grau, kept on the skins for three or four days, and fermented and aged in used French barriques -- until the unfiltered and low-sulfured bottling in September 2015. Very elegant and tender on the palate.
