The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Caillerets, from a parcel located just after Clos Saint Jean, suffered 40% frost damage this vintage. It has a rather introverted nose, not sullen, but without the brightness of a vineyard not so damaged by the frost. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity, pretty and quite tensile if missing some mineralité and complexity on the straitlaced, conservative finish. Drink over the next 5 to 7 years.

Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting, the 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets from Vincent & Sophie Morey has a very fine bouquet, with wonderful mineralité and tension, subtle and offering light yellow flower scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine thread of acidity, saline and lively with a tang of ginger toward the persistent finish. It lacks a little mineralité and loses some precision in the glass, perhaps just outflanked by its peers from Marc Colin and Blain-Gagnard.

Tasted blind at the annual “Burgfest” tasting in Bouilland. The 2013 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets has a slightly muffled bouquet, though it gains some clarity in the glass, offering attractive custard cremes and almond aromas. The palate is balanced with good weight in the mouth, perhaps picked a little later than some of the other Chassagne Caillerets, though the oak seems to come through quite strongly on the finish at the moment. Give this another year in bottle. Tasted May 2016.

Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2012 tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets has a superb set of aromatics: detailed and vibrant, energetic, with tangible mineralité, almost flinty like a Chablis. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, saline in the mouth, spicier than its peers but with superb control and finesse towards the finish. Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Caillerets 2011 from Vincent Morey has a more generous but less complex nose than Paul Pillot’s with pear drop and light peachy notes that don’t quite get a handle on the minerality of Caillerets. The palate is medium-bodied and nicely balanced, a pleasant what you might term “punters’ Cailleret." There is nothing bad here at all, but it lacks the pedigree of some of its peers.
