The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Guettes is a magical swan song vintage for this parcel, which was ripped up for replanting shortly afterwards. Wafting from the glass with aromas of orange rind, wild berries, Indian spices, rose petals, potpourri and loamy soil, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, its powdery structuring tannins and lively acids cloaked in an ample core of fruit. It's the most exotic, carnal wine in the range, and it will be worth a special effort to seek out.

Soaring from the glass with a perfumed bouquet of rose petals, orange rind, Egyptian musk, Indian spices, raspberries and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, sensual and enveloping, with an ample core of bright, succulent fruit framed by supple, melting tannins, concluding with a saline finish. Any readers who have succeeded in securing a few bottles are going to be delighted.

The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Aux Guettes is the high point of Bize's Savigny collection this year, wafting from the glass with a captivating bouquet of rose petals, peonies, red cherries, plums and spicy soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, layered and complete, with a deep core of crunchy fruit, chalky but fine-grained tannins and a long, fragrant finish. This will be well worth seeking out.

The 2014 Savigny les Beaune 1er Cru Aux Guettes has a similar nose to the Marconnets -- maybe the most elegant with blackberry and elderberry scents, and a lovely sense of mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, quite saline in the mouth with a cohesive, harmonious finish. This is a refined Savigny to enjoy over the next ten or so years.
