The 2016 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Vergers has a modest, citrus-scented bouquet with light gravel scents percolating through with time. The palate is well balanced with fine acidity, although the second half is missing the complexity and nervosité of recent vintages, discombobulated by the trauma of losing half its crop to frost.

The 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru les Vergers has a crisp, stony, very focused bouquet with touches of honeysuckle and citrus peel. The palate is well balanced, a little honey on the entry with the one-third new oak neatly integrated. I like the roundness and concentration on the finish, although it needs to muster just a little more nervosité towards the finish.

The 2013 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru les Vergers sees one-third new oak. It has a taut, quite backward, reserved and almost Puligny-like bouquet that needs to muster a little more vigor by the time of bottling. The palate is well balanced with light honeyed notes, slightly lower acidity than I expected, but a caressing finish that just slips down the throat with ease. Lovely.

The 2011 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers has a very attractive bouquet with a pleasant touch of reduction. The palate is well-balanced with light apricot and white peach notes and a very pretty, elegant finish that is graceful and refined. This is one of Thibault’s finest 2011s. Drink now-2018. I have written about Seguin-Manuel on many occasions, ever since a memorable tasting of ancient negociant vintages back in 2005 that elicited more perfect scores than any other (three to be exact.) Winemaker and proprietor Thibault Marion’s wines have little in common with those historical bottles, but he is carving a name for himself as one of Burgundy’s most thoughtful winemakers.
