From Fournier's largest holding, where he has old vines dating back to the 1930s, the 2020 Marsannay Les Longeroies is a medium to full-bodied, layered and rather structured wine evocative of sweet berries, petals, orange rind and spice. A serious, youthfully introverted bottling, it will merit a bit of patience.

The 2016 Marsannay les Longeroies is Laurent's only cuvée from this vineyard this year since he has stopped the non-sulfite version. He told me that it was heterogenous in terms of production, with some parcels yielding 10 hectoliters per hectare and others 30 hectoliters per hectare. Noticeably deep in color, it has a heady, powerful, almost ostentatious bouquet that gets away with it because it is so well defined. Blackberry and blueberry to the fore. There is something a little Central Otago about this. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, the black fruit studded with blood orange notes that lend freshness and tension on the finish. Excellent.
