The 2013 Chambolle Musigny les Veroilles is initially reticent on the nose and demands coaxing, eventually reluctantly revealing redcurrant jus and pomegranate scents. The palate is medium-bodied with an abiding sense of symmetry and poise, the acidity beautifully judged and very harmonious toward the silky, almost Vosne-like finish that oozes class.

The 2012 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles has a refined, gracefully pure redcurrant and raspberry-scented bouquet. The palate is sweet and candied with succulent, fleshy tannins and a generous sweet finish that is Vosne-like in style. This is very fine and the gentle crescendo in the mouth bodes well for the future. It was a balmy, sunny June morning when I last visited Domaine Bruno Clair to take a peek at their 2011s, but it was different arriving to taste their 2012s, the mercury struggling above zero, snow draped over vines. It was a pleasure to meet Bruno and Philippe Brun again, the “Batman and Robin” of Marsannay, Bruno sporting his favorite lumberjack jacket ready to cut down a few trees. At least he was warm. After some reminiscing about his good friend Patrick Bize, we set about the new arrivals. The 2012s were picked between 20 September and 1 October. His village crus are raised in new oak until racking in early September and then transferred into 15-hectolitre foudres to moderate the impact of the wood. Usually they de-stem the entire crop, but the ripeness of the stems meant that his top crus include 20% whole cluster this year. They both seemed enthusiastic about the vintage and rightly so – this is a domaine that shifted up a gear and vies for the village’s leading domaine (even though their Gevrey holdings make the synonymous with the village further south.) Bruno and Philippe just appear to have found the knack of creating wines with finesse and character, a more prudent approach that has fostered more terroir-driven Pinot Noirs. Their Clos Saint Jacques was once and “also ran”. Now it is up there with the likes of Fourrier and Rousseau. The 2011 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles comes from terres blanche soils just below Bonnes-Mares. It offers a slightly disjointed bouquet with some green elements evident. The palate is medium-bodied, but after a crisp opening it feels just a little hollow compared to the excellent Marsannays and it is missing some weight toward the finish. Perhaps it will put on more flesh in bottle, but here it feels a little lightweight. Drink now-2015. I have tasted the wines of this Marsannay-based producer, born from the original Clair-Dau estate in 1979, since tasting my first Pinot Noir, and yet somehow I had never visited their cellars until now. Bruno Clair was on hand himself to guide me through the wines in his blur of French that at times can be difficult to understand, as if every word is joined together. As usual, at his side was cellar-master Philippe Brun. His is a relatively large portfolio spread over their 23 hectares of vineyard, which has expanded in recent years when leasehold contracts with Fougeray de Beauclair and Louis Jadot came to an end. While I found the white 2011s needing a little more precision and complexity, his reds are evolving into fine examples of the vintage and often exhibit a degree of finesse that I could not discern a decade ago. In particular, at the top end there is much to admire from wines that I feel belong within the top tier of producers. The domaine’s Corton-Charlemagne vines lie on the limit of Pernand-Vergelesses and Aloxe-Corton. Though they lie on the side of the latter, their orientation means that the wines tend to evolve more like those located on the Pernand side. The 2010 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles is all finesse and delicacy. Layers of sweet red fruit, freshly cut flowers and spices are some of the notes that flesh out in this silky, impeccably textured Chambolle. A polished, long finish rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2025. This is a fabulous set of wines from Bruno Clair and his long-time oenologist Philippe Brun. The harvest started on September 25. Yields were 22-30 hectoliters per hectare, which is to say a good 10% less than 2003, a torrid vintage marked by tiny yields. Clair describes the fruit as healthy, with no botrytis and soft tannins from the late harvest. The 2010s were 100% destemmed. New oak ranged from 25% for the villages to 50% for the Grand Crus, except for the Marsannays, which saw very little new oak. Clair’s 2009 Chambolle-Musigny Les Veroilles caresses the palate with layers of soft yet intensely perfumed fruit. This shows lovely inner fragrance, superb balance and a soft, engaging personality. It will be virtually impossible to resist in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2019. This is a beautiful set of wines from Bruno Clair. Every wine I tasted with Clair’s longtime oenologist Philippe Brun was gorgeous from top to bottom. While the top 2009s are certainly superb, the real jewels here are the village level wines which appear to be among the great success stories of the 2009 vintage. I tasted all of the wines from barrel, except the Marsannay and Marsannay Les Vaudanelles, both of which were bottled before the 2010 harvest. In 2009 Clair began harvesting on September 15 and ended on the 23rd. I also tasted a handful of 2008s, from a much later harvest that stretched into October. The handful of wines I tasted from that vintage are equally impressive, and equally worth your time.
