Smells rather like green olives, with strands of spicy wood. In the mouth, you get tannins, alcohol and herbs, with a hint of cherry fruit. Strangely muted.——S.H.(3/1/2005)—— 85

Monticello's two 1991 offerings reveal some of the tell-tale characteristics of that vintage. The cool weather that year produced wines with intensely saturated colors, but they are lower in alcohol and lighter-bodied than the 1990s. While the 1991 Merlot possesses fleshy fruit, it does not have the weight or alcoholic clout of many other Merlots. Pure and well-balanced, it is an attractively made wine for drinking over the next 7-8 years.

Monticello's 1990 Merlot-Estate is likely to be controversial given its exotic spicy, meaty, jammy, black-cherry-scented nose. This fat, luscious wine admirably demonstrates what Merlot is all about - sumptuous pleasure!
