The oak-aged 2010 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Funtani shows more spice and tobacco upfront with a bright and crisp quality of berry fruit at the back. Again, it’s really nice to see that a minimalist approach has been taken. Soft fruit and exotic spice are measured and nicely balanced against the wine’s inherent crispness. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. In family hands since 1340 (spanning an amazing 19 generations), this is one of the oldest estates in Italy. Today, it is run by Giovanni Cordero di Montezemolo and his two children Elena and Alberto. The family owns 30 hectares, of which 28 are a single vineyard in the Annunziata cru of La Morra’s Monfalletto-Gattera hill. The 2009 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Funtani shows a riper side with jammy overtones of blackberry and cherry backed by soft density and fleshy texture. The vintage shows a chewy, almost sticky side to the mouthfeel, with more black fruit and prune on the close. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017. The 2008 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Funtani is a gorgeous, mineral-laced wine graced with crushed red raspberries, flowers, subtle spices and new leather. In 2008 the Funtani is remarkably elegant and poised, with terrific focus and fabulous overall balance. The subtle, nuanced finish leaves a lasting impression. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2018. Cordero di Montezemolo is one of the few estates where the 2006s are more interesting than the 2007s, with the exception of the entry-level Barolo Monfalleto. The 2007 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Funtani is fascinating to taste next to the 2008, as it could not be more different. Here the opulence of the vintage comes through in round, jammy blueberries, blackberries, licorice and sweet spices. The 2007 is a far more in your face, fat style of Barbera, but it is nicely balanced all the same. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2017. Cordero di Montezemolo is one of the few estates where the 2006s are more interesting than the 2007s, with the exception of the entry-level Barolo Monfalleto. The 2006 Barbera d’Alba Superiore Funtani is a pretty, floral Barbera with good varietal character and definition in its soft dark fruit and spices. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2012. This is a lovely set of wines from Cordero di Montezemolo, one of the most picturesque properties in all of Piedmont.
