The 2007 Barolo Riserva Gorette is a gorgeous wine that is heavily lavished in oak and ripe Nebbiolo fruit. The oak influences are impossible to miss, but they make sense given the context of the warm vintage and the Riserva philosophy. Even if you don't love oak-driven Nebbiolo, I suggest you give this wine a try - especially as it continues its slow and melodic bottle evolution. There is enough dark fruit, licorice and grilled herb to underline the wine's Nebbiolo authenticity.

The 2001 Barolo Riserva Gorette emerges from the glass with a haunting bouquet that speaks to Nebbiolo’s fascinating allure. Sweet pipe tobacco, dried roses, truffles, leather, spices and plums come together beautifully in the glass. Despite having been bottled in magnum, the 2001 Gorette is wonderfully open, with soft, finessed tannins for a Barolo of this year, voluptuous fruit and a long, caressing finish. Stylistically, it is a Barolo that favors elegance over sheer power. This is another fabulous Barolo from Cordero di Montezemolo. The Gorette is a relatively new wine that is only bottled in top years. So far the Gorette has been made in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2005 and 2007. Typical production is around 1,000 magnums. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021. Cordero di Montezemolo is one of the few estates where the 2006s are more interesting than the 2007s, with the exception of the entry-level Barolo Monfalleto.
