The 2003 “Special Selection” (Quinta do Cardo) is all Touriga Nacional, although the front label does not so indicate. Quinta do Cardo, says the promotional literature, is the vineyard planted at the highest altitude in Portugal. This wine has some light tannins on the finish, but the fruit is a bit reticent. It is relatively closed on opening, as well as focused. It has light intensity. As it opens up, it develops some herbal notes. The fruit blossomed, and I liked it far more. How much you like it will depend in part on whether you gravitate to its herbal flavor component. It is a good value and has nice structure for its price range. Drink now-2013. Founded in 1999 and formally registered as “Sociedade Agricola da Quinta do Romeira de Cima,” this company trades under the umbrella name Companhia das Quintas (literally, “the Estates Company”), signifying its acquisition and ownership of six Quintas in various regions, the latest acquisition being Quinta de Pancas. As the formal name implies, they are headquartered at Quinta do Romeira, an estate with roots going back to the early 17th century.Importer for Cado: Signature Imports, Mansfield, MA; tel: (800) 667-0750.
